Christian Vazquez lost 15 pounds: Boston Red Sox wide receiver ‘feels 10 years younger’ as 2021 season enters
Red Sox wide receiver Christian Vazquez hired a nutritionist during the offseason and lost 15 pounds.
“I’m lighter,” Vazquez said on Friday. “I feel better. I move around the plate better. Feel 10 years younger. It feels good.”
Vazquez enters 2021 as Boston’s No.1 wide receiver. He said he wanted to improve in all areas including offense, defense and fitness this offseason.
“He’s done a lot of things to improve his game,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “I think he built a gym at home and hired a nutritionist, a cook. Lots of Rapsodo. He did a lot of things. He has worked hard over the years to keep improving. … The next step is simply to lead the staff. This is what we want. We love all the player. We love the package. But at the end of the day, we want him to be a leader there.
“He feels like he’s at an age where he needs to make body adjustments,” Cora added. “There is a reason behind this and I hope he can feel cool in August, September.”
Vazquez entered the league in 2014 as a defensive first receiver. But he also provided a solid offense. He hit .278 with a base percentage of .327, .472 slugging percentage, .798 OPS, 30 homers, 35 doubles, a triple and 95 RBIs in 185 games (710 appearances at plate) in 2019-20 combined .
He threw out 39% of the base thieves.
Cora said Vazquez wanted to win a Golden Glove. Puerto Rico has a rich, captivating history with greats like Yadier Molina and Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez.
“I know for a fact that he takes it personal because Martin (Maldonado) has a golden glove. Roberto (Pérez) has two, ”Cora said. “Obviously, Yadi, he is the king of the golden gloves (of) the island. So it’s a position that since 1986, when Benito (Santiago) was called up with the Padres, we’ve been so consistent behind the plate. We’ve had so many good ones. And he wants to be in the conversation. He is one of the big league’s most complete catchers. Offensively, he goes all out. But sometimes these rewards are hard to come by. … He had a good season last year. I think in terms of framing it was good. In terms of blocking, rejecting people. I hope people can recognize him this year and he can get one. I know he wants one.
