Hungary concludes “in principle” deal on Russian gas purchases
Hungary has reached an agreement “in principle” on a long-term contract for the purchase of gas from Russia, Foreign and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó said after talks with Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, according to a report. by the MTI state news wire.
“We would like the term of the new agreement to be extended by 15 years, with flexible prices,” Szijjártó said.
The current gas delivery contract between Hungary and Russia expires at the end of September.
Szijjártó said he also discussed accelerating the pace of the modernization of the Paks nuclear power plant with Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev.
Rosatom is the general contractor for the construction of two additional blocks in Hungary’s only commercial nuclear power plant.
Szijjártó said the conditions would be in place to start the second phase of construction by the end of September, around the deadline for the National Atomic Energy Office (OAH) to respond to the application for a license to operate. work of Paks II.
By next year, the first concrete elements could be in place, he said, adding that Rosatom has all but completed an investment it is working on in Belarus, allowing it to focus its capabilities in the region by Hungary.
