Man arrested in crash and seizure at Saginaw store allegedly committed similar crimes across region
SAGINAW, MI – Following an armed robbery of a Saginaw gas station, police have arrested a suspect who they believe may have committed similar crimes in neighboring counties.
At approximately 4:30 a.m. on Monday, February 22, police responded to the BP gas station at 408 S. Michigan Ave. for an anti-theft alarm. They arrived to find that a glass door had been shattered by a large landscaped brick.
The assailant had fled before the police arrived.
Police contacted the store manager and acquired surveillance camera footage of a man entering the store and stealing 47 cartons of cigarettes. The stolen cigarettes are worth more than $ 4,200, police said.
The footage also showed the burglar fleeing in a white four-door Volkswagen, police said.
Officers checked the area and found the suspect parked at a residence on the 1500 block of Stanley Street. As officers began the process of obtaining a search warrant, a man fled the house and was arrested after a brief foot chase.
Through their investigation, officers came to believe that the 27-year-old was involved in numerous break-ins at party stores and gas stations in the area. The value of items stolen in the break-ins is over $ 150,000, police said.
Saginaw Township Police Detective James MacDonald said that between June 9 and the suspect’s arrest on February 22, there had been 16 similar smash-and-grab style break-ins in Bay Counties. , Midland and Saginaw. The suspect was arrested on July 7 driving a stolen vehicle in Wyoming, Mich., But was released on bail with a GPS tether, which he then cut, MacDonald said.
Saginaw Police Department detectives are working with investigators from several regional departments on the matter.
Chief Bob Ruth praised the officers involved in the case, calling it “excellent police work”. He also credited the effectiveness of a city ordinance passed in 2019 requiring certain businesses to have working surveillance cameras.
“These cameras help solve the crime and make Saginaw a safer place,” said Ruth.
The name of the arrested man is withheld pending arraignment on criminal charges in Saginaw County District Court.
