BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) – Cristiano Ronaldo set the record for most goals in the European Championship with two of them on Tuesday in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Hungary in a crowded Puskas Arena.
Ronaldo scored his 10th goal of the tournament from a penalty kick in the 87th minute, then added a second in added time. He has now scored 11 goals in five continental tournaments. He entered the same match with Michel Platini with nine goals.
Portuguese defender Raphael Guerreiro scored the opening goal three minutes before Ronaldo’s first with a shot that deflected an offending defender and goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.
Ronaldo had missed an easy chance towards the end of the first half when he hit a shot over the crossbar from close range.
It was the first game of the tournament to be played in front of a large crowd amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The 67,215-seat Puskas Arena broke loose after 80 minutes when substitute Szabolcs Schon cut inside from the right and planted a low shot into the corner of the net. But the goal was ruled out because Schon was offside when he ran on the pass.
Ronaldo is now just three behind former Iranian striker Ali Daei’s record 109 international goals.
