Ukraine-Russia war live updates: Zelenskyy accuses Russia of trying to wipe out civilians in Mariupol as Moscow claims city has been cleared of Ukrainian forces
A Spanish village changes its name to Ukraine in solidarity
A village in Spain has changed its name to Ukraine as a sign of support over 4,000 kilometers away.
In the white-walled village of Fuentes de Andalucia, east of Seville, a sign at a roundabout near the entrance to the village has been replaced with Ukraine, along with a blue and yellow flag painted in side.
The streets have been renamed Kyiv City, Odessa and Mariupol in the village which is home to more than 7,000 people.
The village mayor said the name change was more than a gesture.
“The main objective is to raise awareness about the conflict in Ukraine but also about the countries that are at war right now,” Francisco Martinez told Reuters.
He said the villagers raised 3,500 euros ($5,118) in two days, which would be allocated to a planned refugee center.
The village wants to provide accommodation for up to 25 refugees at the center or with families.
Rafael Osuna, a pensioner from the village, said he would host a Ukrainian couple in his home.
“The people of Fuentes are very proud of what we do,” he said.
“As I live alone and have a big house, I thought about hosting a Ukrainian couple for a while.”
